About the project
“Whose Planet?” is a professional development activity for 24 youth workers (18+) from Italy, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Greece, Poland and Portugal which aims to equip participants with the knowledge, skills and tools to raise young people’s awareness about social, economic and environmental injustices related to climate change and empower such young people to take part in climate justice driven eco- activism. The PDA is an EU-wide action organised by Maghweb in the context of the organisation’s extensive green local level activism in Palermo and Sicily’s hinterland: for years, in collaboration with young climate activists, sustainable artisans, makers and slow tourism experts, Maghweb has promoted solidarity initiatives to reduce plastic use, fast fashion and unsustainable consumption habits, creating a local sustainable fashion community and clothes swapping service and raising awareness about the social injustice of environmental degradation and land exploitation caused by over consumption. Through a series of group-led, interactive, non-formal learner activities (simulation activities, problem solving tasks, decolonial world reading, critical reading and viewing of key texts and films, brainstorming, debate, engagement in practical local sustainability and climate justice informed activities) over the course of the week the youth workers will acquire the following:
- Knowledge about: the colonial, capitalist roots of extreme environmental degradation, climate change and biodiversity loss and the consequent creation of climate injustice; key examples of climate justice from within Europe and around the world; the key actors, societal models perpetuating climate injustice across the world; good practices within the climate justice movement which can be implemented at a local level.
- Tools: a concrete set of non-formal education methods and communication tools which enable youth workers to raise awareness about how to integrate a climate justice approach into local level environmental activism at a community level.
- Skills in: cross-border cooperation with other youth workers; confident and considerate self-expression; speaking english; preparing for and leading discussions; thinking critically and transmitting this skill; empathy; awareness-raising; community engagement.
